New instrument features StreamFocus ionization technology and AI-powered intelligence for enhanced sensitivity and efficiency in clinical laboratories.

Shimadzu Scientific Instruments has announced the LCMS-8065XE, a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer designed to deliver enhanced sensitivity, efficiency, and sustainability for clinical laboratory applications.

The instrument introduces StreamFocus ionization technology, which uses a low-dispersion nebulizer nozzle to reduce liquid droplet dispersion while maximizing ion intake efficiency. This technology reduces nebulizer gas consumption by up to sevenfold compared to conventional ESI sources and achieves sensitivity improvements, particularly in negative mode.

The LCMS-8065XE demonstrates sub-ng/L detection limits for PFAS compounds in drinking water using direct injection and delivers three- to 48-fold sensitivity enhancement compared to previous-generation instruments. The system maintains exceptional stability, retaining over 85% of initial response after more than 10,000 consecutive injections of complex wastewater samples with RSD less than 7%.

Advanced Ion Management and Collision Cell Technology

The instrument features an evolved IonFocus unit that utilizes a focusing electrode to selectively guide ions into the intake port while excluding neutral matrix components. This ensures sensitivity even when the ion spray is positioned further from the intake port, delivering superior robustness for long-term analysis.

The UFsweeper IV collision cell incorporates a larger inlet lens diameter and an increased number of lenses for improved ion throughput, enhanced ion transmission, and improved sensitivity and quantitative precision.

The system includes Shimadzu’s Ultra-Fast Mass Spectrometry technology suite, featuring 5-millisecond positive/negative ion switching with zero signal loss, ultra-fast MRM acquisition up to 555 channels per second, and scanning up to 30,000 u per second with maximum ion transmittance.

AI Integration and Environmental Efficiency

The LCMS-8065XE incorporates AI-powered features including Performance Concierge, which automatically monitors system performance and provides proactive maintenance alerts to reduce instrument downtime through predictive diagnostics. Peakintelligence for LCMS delivers AI-driven peak detection with up to 67% reduction in manual review time and superior reproducibility across complex analyses.

The instrument achieves 31% power consumption reduction through intelligent Ecology Mode and 63% lower running costs compared to competitive systems, consuming 1,140 W with the dry pump option. The system features quick maintenance without breaking vacuum and minimal downtime.

PFAS Analysis Capabilities

The instrument includes the FluoroSuite, a PFAS analysis solution with an optional PFAS Analysis Kit for minimized background contamination and low-adsorption Shim-vial consumables. The system supports EPA methods 533/537.1/1633, ASTM 8421, and ISO 21675 regulatory methods.

Integration with LabSolutions Insight enables automatic method optimization and intuitive workflow management for PFAS analysis applications.

The LCMS-8065XE is designed for environmental monitoring, food safety, pharmaceutical analysis, clinical research, and industrial quality control applications. The instrument is available immediately through Shimadzu’s North American network with applications development, training, and service support.
